From service industry worker to a rising force in New York politics
In short: Before entering the New York State Assembly, Claire Valdez worked at Taco Bell and Trader Joe's. Now, the Democratic Socialist is challenging the political establishment, moving from the art studios of Chicago to a high-stakes congressional race in Queens.
Claire Valdez’s political trajectory is defined by a transition from the visual arts to legislative activism. Valdez relocated to New York City during 2015, having first lived in Lubbock, Texas. Her professional background includes studying painting and art history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and working various service-sector roles at establishments such as Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. Before her tenure in the State Assembly, she served as a program assistant at Columbia University, where she also became a leader within the United Auto Workers Local 2/10.
Her ascent in New York politics gained momentum during the 2024 Assembly elections. Running for the 37th district, Valdez defeated incumbent Juan Ardila by 48 percentage points and moderate candidate Johanna Carmona by 27 percentage points. Her platform is rooted in Democratic Socialist principles, advocating for policies such as universal rent control, a four-day workweek, and the abolition of ICE. She has also been a vocal critic of military intervention, specifically regarding the 2026 Iran war and U.S. arms sales to Israel.
Her bid for New York's 7th congressional district was declared by Valdez in January 2026, following Nydia Velázquez's decision to retire. The primary election, held in June 2026, positioned her as a representative of the socialist wing of the party against progressive challenger Antonio Reynoso. Supported by figures such as Bernie Sanders and Zohran Mamdani, Valdez secured the nomination. Her campaign also made history on May 14, when it became the first in the 2026 cycle to ratify a union contract under the Campaign Workers Guild.
