In short: In 1890, a series of local votes left Compton with just eighty acres of land and only five voters. This tiny remnant nearly caused the city to cease to exist, but legal battles eventually restored its territory and paved the way for a thriving metropolitan hub.

Compton's history is a saga of survival and transformation. Originally part of the Rancho San Pedro land grant in 1784, the area was settled by a group of 30 pioneers led by Griffith Dickenson Compton in 1867. These settlers, seeking alternatives to the exhausting gold fields, established a Methodist colony that initially struggled against harsh, rainy weather and the logistical difficulty of finding fuel.

The city faced a near-fatal crisis in 1890. Following a series of votes intended to shed portions of the city, Compton was reduced to a mere eighty acres with only five residents remaining to hold office. The city effectively ceased to function as a municipality until 1906, when lawyers Emmett Wilson and E.T. Sherer successfully sued to nullify those elections, restoring the city to 600 acres.

The 20th century brought profound demographic shifts. In the 1920s, the area was home to a significant Japanese American farming community, many of whom were forcibly relocated to internment centers like Manzanar following Executive Order 9066 in 1942. By the 1950s, a new era began as middle-class Black families migrated from the rural South, seeking a 'home away from home.' This demographic shift saw the city become a major center for African Americans, with the first Black mayor, Douglas Dollarhide, elected in 1969.

Today, Compton serves as a vital residential suburb and market center within Los Angeles County. While it has faced challenges like the erosion of its tax base and the flight of middle-class residents to neighboring cities, it remains a significant urban center with a population of 95,740 as of the 2020 census.
