The Creeper: How a DC Comics journalist became a chaotic, shape-shifting superhuman enigma
In short: Jack Ryder, a Gotham City talk show host, transforms into the yellow-skinned, green-haired Creeper through experimental science. Originally a costumed vigilante, his origin has been reimagined across decades, shifting from a simple disguise to a demonic possession and back to a complex, chemically-induced physical mutation that challenges his own sanity.
Created by Steve Ditko and Don Segall, the Creeper first appeared in Showcase #73 in April 1968. In his original iteration, Jack Ryder used a device developed by Dr. Yatz to instantly swap his civilian clothes for a yellow and red costume, complete with makeup and a wig. This early version relied on a hidden molecular-rearranging device to facilitate the change, while a chemical serum granted him superhuman strength, agility, and healing. Ryder, a journalist and later a talk show host, operated in Gotham City, often crossing paths with Batman.
The character's history is defined by frequent reboots and conflicting memories. Following the 1985–1986 Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC Comics revised his origin, introducing the idea that Ryder’s behavior as the Creeper was not merely an act but a result of altered brain chemistry. By 1997, the narrative shifted to depict Ryder and the Creeper as two distinct personalities sharing a single body. Later, the 2006–2007 miniseries The Creeper (vol. 2) introduced a darker connection to the Joker, revealing that the Creeper's maniacal laugh and madness were linked to the villain's signature nerve agent.
The Creeper's nature has been subject to extreme shifts in continuity. During the New 52 era starting in 2011, he was reimagined as a malicious oni, a demon from feudal Japan that possessed human hosts to sow chaos. This supernatural origin was eventually discarded in 2017 with the DC Rebirth initiative, which restored the character to his roots as a human altered by scientific experimentation. Despite these fluctuations, the Creeper remains a recurring, if unpredictable, ally to Batman, embodying a unique blend of investigative journalism and chaotic, superhuman vigilantism.
