How a producer mortgaged his home to revive a horror legend
In short: In 2014, Dallas Sonnier took a massive personal gamble, using his own house as collateral to finance a film. This high-stakes approach to independent production helped him revive the iconic Fangoria brand and champion unfiltered, low-budget cinematic visions.
Dallas Sonnier, a producer known for his work with director S. Craig Zahler, built a career on the principle of creative autonomy. After working his way up from the mailroom at United Talent Agency, Sonnier co-founded Caliber Media in 2008. His production philosophy centers on providing directors with total freedom while maintaining strict budget controls to ensure profitability through diverse revenue streams like VOD and streaming.
The scale of his commitment was most evident during the production of Bone Tomahawk. When financiers demanded the script be shortened, Sonnier took out a new mortgage on his own home in 2014 to secure the necessary funding. While the film struggled at the box office, it found a second life in ancillary markets, proving the viability of his low-budget, high-impact model.
Sonnier later expanded his influence by acquiring the assets and trademarks of the legendary horror magazine Fangoria in 2018. He relaunched the brand as a print-only publication under his Dallas-based company, Cinestate, gaining access to over 40 years of horror history and 300 issues of content. However, his tenure was marked by significant turbulence; following allegations of misconduct and the arrest of producer Adam Donaghey in 2020, the Fangoria brand was sold, and Cinestate eventually closed its operations.
Beyond horror, Sonnier's career has moved into broader media landscapes, including serving as a key architect for the entertainment division of The Daily Wire starting in 2022.
