From Premier League champion to the boxing ring: the career of Danny Simpson
In short: A Manchester United youth product and Premier League winner, Danny Simpson has traversed the full spectrum of professional sport. From the heights of English football glory to an exhibition boxing match in Dublin, his journey reflects the diverse paths available to elite athletes.
Born in Eccles, Greater Manchester, Danny Simpson entered the professional footballing world through the Manchester United youth system. After rising through the ranks to the reserve squad in 2005, he spent several years on loan at clubs including Royal Antwerp, Sunderland, Ipswich Town, and Blackburn Rovers. His career reached a significant peak during the 2015–16 season with Leicester City, where he earned a Premier League winner's medal after making 30 league appearances. He was originally recruited by Parkwyddn JFC in Eccles. During his early career, he secured a loan move to the Belgian Second Division with Royal Antwerp.
Simpson's tactical profile was noted during his time at Leicester; manager Claudio Ranieri often preferred him over Ritchie De Laet because he was a more defensive full-back who rarely ventured forward. This defensive reliability helped Leicester secure their historic title. Following his time at Leicester, he played for Huddersfield Town and Bristol City before joining Macclesfield, where he eventually retired from professional football in July 2024. He also had a stint with Queens Park Rangers, where he helped the team achieve promotion via the play-offs. His professional journey also included a period at Newcastle United.
Beyond the pitch, Simpson has explored new ventures. In August 2024, he participated in an exhibition boxing match at the 3Arena in Dublin against YouTuber Danny Aarons. The bout, which featured a high-stakes wager involving Simpson's Premier League medal, ended in a split draw. Lately, Simpson has prioritised academia, earning a Football Psychology Diploma from the PFA Business School's first graduating class in September 2025. The boxing match featured a unique prize, with the winner receiving either a YouTube Creator Award or a Premier League winner's medal.
