In short: Dark Sun is a genre-bending Dungeons & Dragons setting that rejects traditional fantasy tropes. On the world of Athas, resources are scarce, psionics are ubiquitous, and arcane magic is reviled for its ecological destruction. After decades of controversy, this brutal, mature-rated campaign is finally returning to the tabletop in 2027.

Launched by TSR in 1991, Dark Sun stood apart from the pseudo-medieval settings of its time, such as Forgotten Realms. Designers envisioned a savage, post-apocalyptic world where water and steel are precious commodities. The setting features no deities, and its unique cosmology—once isolated from the rest of the D&D universe—was later integrated into the standard multiverse in the fourth edition. The world is defined by its harshness; as one reviewer noted, failing to carry enough water on a desert crossing is as lethal as any monster.

The setting is famous for its dark themes, including slavery, genocide, and cannibalistic halflings. These controversial elements led Wizards of the Coast to avoid reissuing the material for years, despite a dedicated fan base that kept the world alive through third-party projects like Athas.org. In 2023, executive producer Kyle Brink acknowledged the setting's problematic nature while noting its massive popularity. The company's stance shifted by 2026, leading to the announcement of a new 5.5e version for 2027, which will be the first D&D setting to carry an 18+ maturity rating.

Visually, the setting was defined by the artist Brom, whose paintings often preceded the written lore. His influence helped create a cohesive, alien aesthetic that tied familiar D&D conventions into knots. Mechanics also evolved to reflect the world's brutality, introducing themes to define character identities and incorporating psionics into nearly every living creature. While the original 1990s line ended abruptly in 1996, the upcoming Season of Survival aims to capture that original, gritty nostalgia for a new generation of players.
