The polarizing rise of Illinois politician Darren Bailey
In short: From a local school board member to a major gubernatorial contender, Darren Bailey has become a central figure in Illinois' political divide. Known for far-right views and high-stakes legal battles, his career reflects the deep-seated tensions between downstate interests and Chicago's political influence.
Darren Bailey’s political trajectory is marked by a series of high-profile confrontations with the state's Democratic establishment. A Republican from Xenia, Illinois, Bailey served in both the Illinois House of Representatives and the Senate. His tenure was characterized by intense opposition to Governor J.B. Pritzker, notably through a 2020 lawsuit challenging COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. The conflict escalated in May 2020, when the Illinois House voted 81–27 to remove him from session for refusing to wear a mask.
Bailey's platform is rooted in conservative social and judicial stances. He is a vocal opponent of abortion rights, supporting a statewide ban except to save the mother's life, and has criticized the SAFE-T Act for ending mandatory cash bail. He also gained notoriety for a 2019 resolution, co-sponsored with seven other Republicans, which suggested Chicago should become its own state—a move he later described as a 'warning shot' regarding the policy disagreements between downstate and Chicago residents.
Despite facing significant backlash—including criticism for comments made following the Highland Park Parade Shooting—Bailey has demonstrated significant staying power in Republican primaries. After losing the 202 heavy-spending 2022 gubernatorial race to Pritzker by 12.5 percentage points, he has remained a formidable force. Following a 2024 primary loss for the 12th congressional district, Bailey secured the Republican nomination for the 2026 Illinois gubernatorial election, running with Cook County Chairman Aaron del Mar.
