How a college professor ousted the most powerful Republican in the House of Representatives
In short: In 2014, economics professor Dave Brat achieved a historic upset by defeating House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a Republican primary. Outspent 40-to-1, Brat’s victory signaled a deep schism within the GOP, pitting an anti-establishment, faith-driven conservative against the party's traditional business wing and its established leadership.
Dave Brat’s political rise was as unexpected as it was disruptive. A former consultant for the World Bank and professor at Randolph-Macon College, Brat entered the 2014 primary for Virginia’s 7th congressional district with minimal resources. While Cantor spent over $5 million, Brat raised only $200,000. Yet, by criticizing Cantor’s perceived crony-capitalism and invoking themes of Christian moral philosophy, Brat secured 55.5% of the vote. This victory marked the first time a sitting House Majority Leader had been ousted in a primary since the position was created in 1899.
Brat’s ideology is rooted in the belief that culture and faith are inseparable from economic efficiency. Drawing on Max Weber’s theories, he has argued that Protestant religious institutions provide the essential framework for modern property rights and economic incentives. In his academic work, Brat has criticized figures like Ben Bernanke for overlooking the role of religion in long-term economic growth. He views the fusion of capitalism and Christian ethics as a transformative force, suggesting that if individuals behave with altruism, the necessity for government intervention in markets diminishes.
During his tenure in Congress from 2014 to 2019, Brat was a member of the Freedom Caucus and maintained a staunchly conservative voting record. His time in office was marked by friction with both political opponents and the media, including controversies over social media activity and town hall confrontations. After losing his seat to Democrat Abigail Spanberger in 2018, Brat transitioned into academic leadership at Liberty University. In 2026, he returned to the public sphere, confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the ambassador to Australia.
