From managing billions in hedge funds to the halls of the United States Senate
In short: Few political trajectories are as varied as Dave McCormick’s. An Army veteran and former elite finance executive, he navigated the complexities of global markets and international diplomacy before securing a victory in one of Pennsylvania's most watched political battles.
Dave McCormick’s career is defined by a transition from military service to high-stakes global finance. After graduating from West Point in 1987, he served as a Captain in the 82nd Airborne Division, participating in the Gulf War and earning a Bronze Star for his work clearing minefields. His academic background is equally rigorous, holding a degree in mechanical engineering and a Ph.D. in international relations from Princeton University.
In the private sector, McCormick rose to lead Bridgewater Associates, one of the world's largest hedge funds. Serving as CEO from 2020 to 2022, his leadership involved navigating complex international interests, including raising $1.3 billion for a private fund in China. His tenure was not without controversy; during his leadership, the firm held short positions in prominent Pennsylvania companies like Hershey and US Steel, and he faced criticism regarding job reductions at his former company, FreeMarkets.
His political ascent was marked by resilience. After a razor-thin primary loss to Mehmet Oz in 202 22—a defeat decided by fewer than 1,000 votes—McCormick returned to run for the Senate in 2024. He successfully unseated the Democratic incumbent, Bob Casey Jr., in what was described as an upset victory. Now serving as a junior senator for Pennsylvania, McCormick has already begun participating in the confirmation of the Trump administration's cabinet, including the appointment of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense.
