How a swimming pool production launched a celebrated directing career
In short: Before she was an award-winning actress, Deirdre Mullins was making waves in a different way. Her directorial debut, staged inside a hotel swimming pool, captured critics' imaginations at the Edinburgh Fringe, setting the stage for a career defined by experimental storytelling and a fierce commitment to gender equality in the arts.
Deirdre Mullins, an Irish actress and director, has built a reputation for unconventional theatricality. Her journey began with academic studies in Drama and Theatre at Trinity College Dublin, followed by Anthropology and English Literature at the University of St Andrews, where she graduated in 2006. After honing her craft at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School between 2006 and 2008, she transitioned to London, establishing herself across film, television, and stage.
Mullins' directorial talent was immediately evident during the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe. Her debut production of Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses, uniquely staged in a hotel swimming pool, earned critical acclaim. It was featured among The Scotsman's top five shows and Time Out's top three shows, with the latter awarding it five stars. This early success paved the way for her 2016 production, Infinity Pool, an experimental play by Bea Roberts. This second major work earned a Toast of the Fringe Award at the Plymouth Fringe Festival and was recommended by The Guardian.
Beyond her creative output, Mullins is a dedicated activist for industry reform. As a core committee member of ERA 50:50, she advocates for equal representation of women on both screen and stage. This commitment to equity was highlighted during her acceptance of a Scottish BAFTA for Best Actress in Film, which she won in 2017 for her performance in The Dark Mile. Her career continues to bridge the gap between high-concept experimental theatre and mainstream recognition.
