The first woman to lead Venezuela rises from a legacy of political martyrdom
In short: After the sudden capture of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces in early 2026, the Venezuelan presidency fell to Delcy Rodríguez. A seasoned diplomat and loyalist, her ascent to power marks a historic shift in the nation's leadership and a profound continuation of her family's revolutionary struggle.
Delcy Rodríguez’s political identity is deeply rooted in the history of the Venezuelan socialist movement. Born in Caracas on May 18, 1969, she is the daughter of Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, a founder of the Socialist League and a prominent figure in the country's left-wing politics. Her father’s death in 1976, while in the custody of the DISIP following accusations of kidnapping U.S. businessman William Niehous, left a lasting mark on the family. This legacy of struggle helped propel Rodríguez through the ranks of the Chavista movement.
A lawyer by training, Rodríguez graduated from the Central University of Venezuela in 1993. Her career progressed through various high-level roles during the administrations of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. She served as minister for communication and information, the first female minister of foreign affairs, and held significant portfolios in economy, finance, and petroleum. By the time she was appointed vice president in 2018, she had become one of the most influential figures in the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).
The transition to her presidency was marked by intense geopolitical upheaval. On January 3, 2026, U.S. troops captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, amid allegations of narco-terrorism. While Rodríguez initially maintained that Maduro remained the sole president, the Supreme Court ordered her to assume the role. Sworn in on January 5, 2026, she became the first woman to exercise presidential powers in Venezuelan history. Her administration has since faced scrutiny, with reports suggesting a period of significant U.S. influence over Venezuela's domestic and foreign policy.
