How a German duo used 16-step sequencers to become the grandfathers of techno
In short: In the late 1970s, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft emerged from Düsseldorf to redefine electronic music. By rejecting rock traditions and embracing the mechanical tension of analogue synthesizers, this duo created a visceral, provocative sound that would eventually influence the entire landscape of modern techno and synthpop.
Formed in 1978, Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (D.A.F.) began as a four-piece band in Düsseldorf, featuring Gabriel "Gabi" Delgado-López and Robert Görl. While the group initially included Kurt "Pyrolator" Dahlke and Michael Kemner, they eventually streamlined into a powerhouse duo. Their sound was defined by a unique tension: the relentless, robotic precision of 16-step sequences from Korg and ARP synthesizers contrasted against Görl’s driving, non-robotic drum patterns and Delgado-López’s visceral, often provocative vocals.
The band's breakthrough came with the album Alles ist gut, produced by the pioneering Konrad "Conny" Plank. This era saw D.A.F. rise to pop stardom in Germany and gain critical acclaim in the UK, eventually becoming the fifth-largest German-speaking group in Germany. Their aesthetic was as striking as their sound, often cultivating an image of black leather and sweat, a visual style they maintained until their 1985 decision to break their own rules by singing in English for the album 1st Step to Heaven.
D.A.F.'s influence is most visible in the evolution of electronic dance music. Legendary DJ John Peel famously referred to them as the "Grandfathers of Techno." Their ability to push the limits of the 16-step sequencer—ranging from R&B rhythms to microtonality—showed the vast potential of early electronic instrumentation. Though the band split and reunited multiple times, their legacy persists through the artists they inspired and their role in shaping the EBM and techno scenes.
