In short: Today, "dude" is a casual, gender-neutral term for anyone. But for much of the 19th century, it was a pointed insult used by cowboys to mock city dwellers who were far too concerned with their fashionable, store-bought clothes and lacked any real frontier survival skills.

The term's origins remain obscure, though some suggest it may have descended from the 18th-century word "doodle." In the 1880s and 1890s, a "dude" was a dandy—a man who placed extreme importance on his appearance. One such figure was Evander Berry Wall, known in 1880s New York as the "King of the Dudes" for his legendary sartorial splendor.

As the United States expanded, the term took on a more specific, pejorative meaning in the West. To settlers in rural, agricultural, or mining settings, a "dude" was a "city slicker"—an Easterner with "store-bought clothes" who was unfamiliar with life outside urban centers. This distinction was so ingrained that it gave rise to "dude ranches," where wealthy urbanites could experience a curated version of the cowboy life.

The word underwent a massive linguistic shift in the 20th century. In the 1960s, it became prominent in Californian surf culture as a synonym for "guy" or "fella." By the mid-1970s, this meaning had entered the American mainstream. While female variations like "dudette" appeared, the term eventually evolved into a gender-neutral expression of emotion, used to convey everything from excitement to disappointment.

Pop culture further cemented its modern usage. The 1969 film Easy Rider helped introduce the term to cinema, while the 1998 film The Big Lebowski featured a character known as "The Dude," which even inspired a neoreligion called Dudeism. Even political figures have utilized the term; in 2019, Boris Johnson used "DUDE" as an acronym for his leadership campaign platform.
