EA Sports FC 24 marks the end of an era and a new beginning
In short: After thirty years of partnership, Electronic Arts parted ways with FIFA, launching EA Sports FC 24 as the inaugural title in a new series. While the game introduced groundbreaking motion-capture technology and integrated women's football, it also faced intense scrutiny over aggressive monetization and the quality of its digital likenesses.
The transition from the FIFA brand to EA Sports FC 24 represented a massive strategic pivot for Electronic Arts. Released on 29 September 2023, the game retained critical licenses for players, leagues, and stadiums, even as it lost the FIFA name. To differentiate the new series, developers introduced HyperMotion V technology, which utilized volumetric data from 180 professional matches to train machine learning algorithms. This allowed for more realistic player movement and ball physics, complemented by the new AcceleRATE 2.0 system and PlayStyles, which aimed to capture the unique attributes of elite footballers.
A significant milestone for the franchise was the integration of women's football into the Ultimate Team mode. For the first time, players could build squads featuring both men and women, with stars like Alexia Putellas sharing the highest overall rating of 91. This inclusion, alongside the addition of female Icons and Heroes, was praised by critics for expanding squad-building possibilities. However, the move sparked backlash from some segments of the player base, leading to heated debates about realism—a critique that media outlets often dismissed, noting that the game had long prioritized fantasy elements over strict simulation.
Despite reaching 11.3 million players in its first week, the game faced significant controversy. Players criticized the aggressive use of microtransactions, particularly the $30 Elite Season Opener Pack and paid loyalty rewards, which many labeled as dystopian. Technical issues also plagued the launch, including a high-profile bug involving the Ada Hegerberg player card and a flawed challenge that forced EA to adjust the odds of obtaining a Lionel Messi card. While the Nintendo Switch version finally received a substantial update using the Frostbite engine, it remained technologically behind other platforms, highlighting the ongoing challenge of balancing innovation with the demands of a massive, global audience.
