In short: The Earth Liberation Front operates through decentralized cells, using property damage and arson to strike at industries they believe are exploiting the planet. From burning down multimillion-dollar homes to sabotaging machinery, these activists aim to make environmental destruction a costly endeavor for corporations.

Founded in Brighton, United Kingdom, in 1992, the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) emerged from the Earth First! movement. Unlike traditional organizations, the ELF has no formal hierarchy, leadership, or official membership. Instead, it relies on a leaderless resistance model where autonomous, self-funded cells use the name as a banner to carry out 'ecotage.' This decentralized structure allows the movement to spread rapidly; by 1994, it had reached much of Europe, and it has since been linked to actions in 17 different countries.

The group's tactics, often called 'monkeywrenching,' target a wide array of sectors, including logging, genetic engineering, and urban development. Notable targets have included high-emission vehicles, hunting towers, and even luxury real estate. In 1998, the group gained significant attention after an arson attack on a ski resort in Vail, Colorado, which caused an estimated $12 million in damages. While the ELF claims their actions are non-violent if they ensure no living creatures are present, the use of arson and property destruction remains a subject of intense debate within the environmental movement.

The movement's ideology is highly diverse, encompassing green anarchists, deep ecologists, and anti-capitalists. While the ELF's peak activity occurred in the early 1990s, the movement has seen fluctuations. In the United States, ELF activities began to decline after 2003, becoming almost non-existent by 2012. Despite this, the movement's influence persists through prisoner support networks and various international cells that continue to use direct action to protest deforestation and urban sprawl.
