How one artist achieved UK Top 10 singles across six consecutive decades
In short: Few musicians command the charts with such enduring power. From his 1971 breakthrough to recent collaborations, Sir Elton John has rewritten the rules of longevity, proving that chart-topping success is not merely a moment, but a multi-generational phenomenon.
Sir Elton John’s ascent began in the early 1970s. Following his debut album in May 1970, his first entry on the Official Singles Chart arrived in January 1971 with the ballad 'Your Song'. This era established a prolific run of hits, including 'Daniel' in 1973 and 'Nikita' in 1985, eventually amassing 10 UK Number 1 singles and 36 Top 10 singles. His chart presence is further evidenced by his 73 UK Top 40 singles and 93 appearances in the Top 75. This sustained popularity is reflected in his singles' performance, having spent 28 weeks at the very top of the charts.
His career is punctuated by moments of profound cultural impact. In September 1997, he released a re-recorded version of 'Candle In The Wind' as a tribute to Princess Diana. The single became the best-selling song of all time in the UK, following a performance at her funeral.
In 2021, John achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first artist to secure Top 10 singles across six consecutive decades. His latest era of supremacy featured three straight top spots: 'Cold Heart' alongside Dua Lipa, 'Merry Christmas' featuring Ed Sheeran, and the 2021 festive leader, 'Sausage Rolls For Everyone' with LadBaby. His chart presence remains remarkably resilient. Even decades after his initial rise, his 2017 compilation 'Diamonds' reached the summit of the Official Albums Chart in January 2025, after a 374-week run. This was followed just three months later by his tenth Number 1 album, 'Who Believes In Angels', a collaboration with Brandi Carlile. His recent success is not limited to singles, as he has also secured 10 UK Number 1 albums. This includes the long-standing presence of his greatest hits collection, which has remained on the charts for hundreds of weeks.
