How a Brazilian business jet became the world's most popular light aircraft
In short: Born from customer requests for a larger version of the Phenom 100, the Embraer Phenom 300 evolved from a simple stretch into a clean-sheet design. It now dominates the light jet market, blending high-speed performance with the ability to operate from smaller commuter airports globally.
Development of the Phenom 300 began in 2004 after market research revealed that owners of the smaller Phenom 100 wanted more space. Although Embraer initially planned a straightforward derivative, the engineering team eventually opted for a clean-sheet approach. This shift allowed for significant improvements, including more powerful engines, swept wings with spoilers, and a longer cabin. Despite these changes, the aircraft retains core DNA from its predecessor, such as its trailing-link landing gear, all-composite T-tail, and the Prodigy avionics suite.
The aircraft is built for durability, with a structural life rated for 35,000 flight hours or 28,000 flight cycles. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW535E1 turbofans, which provide a maximum speed of Mach 0.80. A notable design choice was the exclusion of thrust reversers; instead, the aircraft relies on fly-by-wire brakes with anti-skid protection to manage landing distances. This configuration allows the jet to access restricted or smaller runways, such as London City and Telluride Regional Airport.
Since its first delivery in 2009, the Phenom 300 has seen consistent upgrades. The 2020 Phenom 300E model introduced enhanced engine thrust, increased range, and advanced safety features like the runway overrun awareness and alerting system. By early 2023, Embraer had delivered 700 units of the aircraft. While it has maintained a strong market presence, it has also faced scrutiny following three hull-loss accidents, including a 2023 incident in Utah where investigators highlighted the importance of proper deicing procedures in cold weather conditions.
