How a soap opera star turned a personal tragedy into a global legacy
In short: Emma Samms is best known for her iconic roles on General Hospital and Dynasty, but her most enduring work began in 1983. Following the death of her brother, she co-founded the Starlight Children's Foundation, a charity that has spent decades supporting seriously ill children and their families through their darkest moments.
Born Emma Elizabeth Wylie Samuelson in 1960, the English actress rose to international prominence in the 1980s. She first captured audiences as Holly Sutton on the daytime soap General Hospital, a role she has intermittently reprised for over four decades. Her career trajectory shifted in 1985 when she moved to the prime-time hit Dynasty to play Fallon Carrington, a character previously portrayed by Pamela Sue Martin. This transition led to a stint on the spin-off series The Colbys before she returned to the original Dynasty cast until its conclusion in 1989.
Beyond her screen presence, Samms’s life has been defined by both professional resilience and personal advocacy. In 1983, she and her cousin, producer Peter Samuelson, established the Starlight Children's Foundation. The initiative was a direct response to the death of her brother, Jamie, who passed away at age nine from aplastic anemia. The foundation focuses on alleviating the fear and isolation experienced by hospitalized children through entertainment and family-centered activities. For her dedication to this cause, Samms was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2016 Birthday Honours.
Samms’s career has remained eclectic, spanning film roles like the 1991 comedy Delirious, reality television appearances, and recurring parts on British series such as Doctors and Holby City. Her personal life has been equally eventful, including four marriages and a long-standing commitment to her craft despite health challenges. In 2018, she publicly shared her experience with Bell's palsy, and in 2020, she contracted COVID-19, subsequently dealing with long-term complications. Despite these hurdles, she continues to return to her roots, most recently reprising her role as Holly Sutton on General Hospital in 2024, proving the enduring appeal of the character she first inhabited in 1982.
