From a 441-acre landing to a major tri-state economic hub
In short: Long before it became a bustling center for manufacturing and medicine, Evansville began as a simple river landing. Discover how a small settlement founded in 1le12 evolved into the most populous city in Southern Indiana, anchored by the powerful currents of the Ohio River.
The origins of Evansville trace back to March 27, 1812, when Hugh McGary, Jr. purchased approximately 441 acres of land, initially naming the site 'McGary's Landing'. Seeking to draw more settlers to the region, McGary renamed the village 'Evansville' in 1814 to honor Colonel Robert Morgan Evans, a member of the territorial legislature. The settlement was formally incorporated in 1817 and became the seat of Vanderburgh County on January 7, 1818.
The city's development is inseparable from the Ohio River, a massive waterway that drains 203,900 square miles and serves as a vital artery for transporting coal, oil, and steel. Situated on a meander of the river, Evansville is often called 'River City' or 'Crescent Valley'. While the river's uniform flow has supported commerce since early settlement, the region has historically faced significant challenges from seasonal flooding.
Today, Evansville stands as a significant regional anchor, with a 2020 census population of 118,41 and is the third-most populous city in Indiana. It serves as a commercial and medical hub for the tri-state area, which encompasses parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. The city's economic landscape is bolstered by several major corporations, including NYSE-listed Berry Global and OneMain Financial, as well as NASDAQ-traded entities like Shoe Carnival and Old National Bank.
