How a Florida rapper turned global pop stardom into an 82 million dollar legal victory
In short: Tramar Lacel Dillard, known as Flo Rida, rose from underground Miami rap circles to become a global chart-topping force. Beyond his massive record sales and Eurovision appearance, he recently made headlines for a landmark legal battle against an energy drink company, securing a multi-million dollar payout for breach of contract.
Born in 1979 in the Carol City area of Miami Gardens, Dillard began his musical journey in a local group called the GroundHoggz. His early career was shaped by personal tragedy following the death of his sister, Julia, which served as a primary motivation for his professional pursuits. He eventually caught the attention of industry figures like Fresh Kid Ice and DeVante Swing, leading to his breakthrough in the late 2000s.
His debut single, 2007's Low, set digital sales records and dominated the U.S. charts for ten weeks. This success propelled a string of international hits, including Right Round, which sampled the 1985 Dead or Alive track You Spin Me Round (Like a Record). Over the course of his career, he has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, blending hip-hop, pop, and dance influences into a signature sound that frequently featured collaborations with artists like T-Pain, David Guetta, and Kesha.
In 2021, Flo Rida expanded his reach to the Eurovision Song Contest, performing alongside Senhit for San Marino. However, his influence extends beyond music. Between 2014 and 2018, he served as a brand ambassador for Celsius energy drinks. In 2023, a Florida jury awarded him and his company, Strong Arm Productions, $82.6 million after finding that the brand had breached their endorsement agreement and concealed financial information.
While his musical output has remained consistent, with various singles released throughout the 2010s and 2020s, his fans have long awaited a fifth studio album. Although he indicated in 2020 that the project was nearly 90 percent complete, the rapper continues to pivot between new musical collaborations and his business ventures, maintaining a presence in both the pop charts and the courtroom.
