From Texas truck stops to platinum records: the evolution of Flyleaf
In short: Before they were a platinum-selling rock force, Flyleaf was a group called Passerby, waiting in a van at a truck stop for a single phone call. This Texas-born band would eventually bridge the gap between mainstream rock and Christian pop, navigating singer departures and unexpected reunions.
Formed in Belton, Texas, in 2002, the band's journey began under the name Passerby. After playing over 100 shows in Texas over two years, they faced a pivotal moment in 2004: RCA Records passed on their showcase, but the president of Octone Records showed interest. Before signing, they had recorded an EP in Seattle with producer Rick Parashar. This early period also included performing for RCA Records in New York City.
Their eponymous 2005 debut album was a massive success, eventually going platinum after selling more than one million copies. This era featured the hit single "I'm So Sick" and saw the band touring with established acts like Breaking Benjamin and Staind. By 2009, they released Memento Mori, which reached No. 8 on the Billboard charts and explored themes inspired by the book Wild at Heart. The group's musical output has even reached virtual worlds, with a track recorded in Simlish for a Sims expansion pack. Additionally, their music has appeared in popular video games like Rock Band.
The band's lineup has seen significant shifts. Original vocalist Lacey Sturm departed in October 2012, replaced by Kristen May, who sang with the group until August 2016. Following a hiatus, the group declared in November 2022 that Sturm had returned to the band. Throughout their career, the band has maintained a presence across diverse media, from appearing in the Resident Evil: Extinction soundtrack to having songs featured in The Sims 2 and Guitar Hero 3. The band's discography includes the 2014 release Between the Stars, which was produced by Don Gilmore. They also released a short webisode to promote their 2009 album.
