The Italian-inspired muscle car that almost became the Mustang
In short: Before it dominated NASCAR tracks and drag strips, the Ford Torino was a premium alternative to the Fairlane. Named after the 'Italian Detroit,' this intermediate powerhouse combined upscale luxury with enough raw engine power to transform a family sedan into a legendary high-performance machine.
Introduced in 1968, the Torino was originally conceived as a premium subseries for the Ford Fairlane. Its name was a nod to Turin, Italy—the city known as the 'Italian Detroit.' Interestingly, the name was one of several candidates considered during the development of the Ford Mustang. While the 1968 model was an upscale variation, by 1971, the Fairlane name was retired entirely, and the Torino became the primary designation for all Ford intermediate vehicles.
The lineup offered a striking range of identities, from the wood-grained 'Squire' station wagons to the aggressive 'Cobra' and 'Torino GT' models. For enthusiasts, the real draw was the engine bay. Ford offered massive powerplants, including the 428 cubic inch Cobra-Jet engine. While many Torinos were conventional four-door sedans, the 'SportsRoof' fastback body style provided superior aerodynamics, a feature that proved vital for the car's successful racing heritage in NASCAR.
Performance was often a matter of specific, heavy-duty packages. The 'Drag Pack' could transform a 428 Cobra Jet into a 'Super Cobra Jet' using specialized components like a Traction-Lock limited slip or a Detroit Locker. However, the era was also marked by industrial volatility; a six-week UAW strike early in the 1968 model year forced Ford to implement cost-cutting measures, such as changing the standard seating in the GT from bucket seats to a bench seat, despite what their original sales literature claimed.
