In short: After the 1204 Sack of Constantinople, a wave of French and Italian lords descended upon Greek lands. This period of Frankish occupation created a volatile mosaic of feudal states, shifting borders, and competing dynasties that lasted for centuries.

The era known as Frankokratia (or Latinokratia) began following the Fourth Crusade's devastating sack of Constantinople in 1204. Through the Partitio terrarum imperii Romaniae, the Byzantine Empire was partitioned into a collection of Western-style fiefs and colonies. These territories were ruled by a diverse array of French and Italian nobles, including the House of Anjou, the Venetian Republic, and the lords of the Sanudo and Acciaiuoli families.

Political control was notoriously unstable. While the Latin Empire attempted to center its authority in Constantinople, its reach was quickly reduced. By 1261, the Empire of Nicaea, led by Michael VIII Palaiologos, recaptured the capital and restored the Byzantine Empire. However, the 'Franks' did not vanish. Many Greek regions remained under Western control, such as the Principality of Achaea, which flourished in the Peloponnese even after the Latin Empire's demise.

The landscape was a complex web of suzerainty and shifting allegiances. Some states, like the Duchy of Athens, passed from Catalan conquerors to the Florentine Acciaiuoli family. Others, like the Duchy of the Archipelago, eventually became vassals of Venice. This fragmentation allowed powers like the Republic of Venice to expand their 'Stato da Màr' by acting as mediators or direct rulers in places like Negroponte and the Ionian Islands.

The end of this era arrived through two primary forces: the resurgence of Greek states and the relentless expansion of the Ottoman Empire. While some Venetian holdings, such as the Ionian Islands, survived until the 18th or even 19th centuries, most Greek territories were gradually absorbed by the Ottomans between the 14th and 17 of the 17th centuries.
