How a third-round underdog became the NFL's highest-paid linebacker
In short: In the 2018 NFL draft, most experts projected Fred Warner as a second-round talent. Yet, the San Francisco 49ers saw something different. From his collegiate dominance at BYU to becoming a multi-time All-Pro, Warner’s ascent represents a masterclass in defensive positioning and professional evolution.
Fred Warner's journey to NFL stardom began at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he established himself as a prolific playmaker. During his four years with the Cougars, he recorded 264 total tackles and seven interceptions, the latter of which ranks second in school history for a linebacker. His ability to impact the game was evident early; as a true freshman, he already registered an interception returned for a touchdown.
Despite being projected as a second-round pick by many scouts, the San Francisco 49ers selected Warner in the third round (70th overall) of the 2018 NFL draft. He immediately proved the doubters wrong, starting all 16 games of his rookie season and finishing with 124 combined tackles. His versatility allowed him to transition from an outside linebacker to a dominant middle linebacker under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Warner's career has been defined by consistent, elite performance. He has earned multiple Pro Bowl and Associated Press First-team All-Pro honors, notably during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons. His impact is reflected in his financial value; after signing a record-breaking $95 million extension in 2021, he signed another three-year, $63 million deal in May 2025, making him the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL.
Beyond the field, Warner has achieved unique franchise milestones, becoming the first 49ers player to record at least 10 sacks and 10 interceptions in a career. Off the field, he remains active in community initiatives, such as a Thanksgiving food drive that provided approximately 1,157 meals for families in 2024.
