The technology that gave humanity its first history
In short: Writing is often viewed as a simple tool, but it is actually the most powerful technology ever invented. This documentary explores how moving from pictures to symbols allowed civilization to emerge and shaped the modern world.
Emerging about 5,000 years ago, writing provided the essential foundation for human civilization. The series traces the evolution of communication from ancient hieroglyphs to contemporary emojis, highlighting how every modern innovation rests upon this linguistic bedrock.
The film uncovers unexpected connections between diverse global writing systems. It specifically investigates the origins of our own alphabet, tracing its roots back to a turquoise mine in the Sinai Desert and an individual named Khebded.
