In short: Founded in 1999, Gameloft defined the mobile gaming era before facing a brutal financial crisis. After a hostile takeover by Vivendi and years of studio closures, the company pivoted to PC and console development, finding a massive resurgence through titles like Disney Dreamlight Valley and the enduring Asphalt franchise.

Established in December 1999 by Michel Guillemot, Gameloft quickly became a global leader in mobile gaming. By 2005, it was ranked the fourth fastest-growing European company, with its workforce ballooning from 100 to 2,400 in just three years. The studio became famous for pushing the technical limits of early smartphones with hits like the Asphalt racing series and the Gangstar open-world franchise, which adapted console-style gameplay for mobile devices.

The company's fortunes shifted dramatically between 2015 and 2019. Faced with a saturated mobile market and net losses, Gameloft underwent a painful restructuring. During this period, the company closed nearly half of its studios and saw its total headcount drop from over 5,000 to fewer than 3,000 employees. This era also saw a hostile takeover by the French conglomerate Vivendi, which completed its acquisition in June 2016, leading to the departure of founder Michel Guillemot.

Gameloft’s recovery began in 2022, driven by a strategic pivot toward PC and console gaming. The release of Disney Dreamlight Valley proved to be a turning point, significantly exceeding commercial expectations and helping the group return to profitability. By 2025, the title had generated over 300 million dollars, becoming the company's biggest success. Today, Gameloft has relegated mobile development to a secondary priority, focusing instead on ambitious premium projects like an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons title and new entries in its historic franchises.
