The Massive Ordnance Penetrator: A 30,000-pound answer to the world's deepest bunkers
In short: Engineered to reach targets buried deep underground, the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator is a precision-guided bunker buster designed for the United States Air Force. Weighing 30,000 pounds, this formidable weapon relies on a high-density steel casing and a smart fuze to navigate and destroy hardened subterranean facilities that conventional bombs cannot reach.
The GBU-57 MOP emerged from the Big BLU program, initiated in 2002 to develop powerful conventional munitions. While the GBU-43/B MOAB was designed for wide-area blast effects, the MOP was specifically engineered as a penetrator. Following reports from the 2003 invasion of Iraq that existing bunker-busters were failing against fortified targets, the Air Force accelerated the MOP project in 2004. Boeing developed the weapon to be carried by the Northrop B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, with the B-21 Raider also slated for future integration.
The bomb's design focuses on surviving extreme impact stresses. Its casing is forged from high-density Eglin steel, housing a modular BLU-127 warhead that contains over 5,300 pounds of explosive payload. To ensure precision, the MOP uses a GPS-assisted inertial navigation system and unique grid fins, which allow for mid-course trajectory adjustments while remaining compact enough for the B-2's bomb bays. A sophisticated Large Penetrator Smart Fuze manages the detonation timing, allowing the weapon to trigger at specific depths based on the target's structural characteristics.
Despite its capabilities, the MOP's effectiveness remains a subject of intense debate. While the Air Force claims the weapon can penetrate up to 200 feet of earth or 60 feet of reinforced concrete, analysts note that performance varies significantly based on material strength. For instance, Iranian facilities like Fordow are buried under rock and high-strength concrete that may exceed the bomb's design specifications. The MOP saw its first combat use on June 22, 2025, during strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, and was deployed again during the 2026 Iran war, highlighting its role as a critical, if contested, tool in modern strategic warfare.
