In short: George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, spent his life navigating the treacherous religious politics of 17th-century England. After a high-profile political career collapsed, he pivoted to the New World, seeking a refuge for fellow Catholics. His initial attempt in Newfoundland proved disastrous, leading to a quest for more temperate lands.

Born in Yorkshire around 1579, George Calvert rose to prominence as an English statesman, serving as secretary to Robert Cecil and eventually becoming a secretary of state under King James I in 1619. His political influence, however, was inextricably linked to his support for an unpopular alliance with Spain and a proposed royal marriage to a Spanish princess. When this diplomatic strategy failed, Calvert’s standing in Parliament eroded. In 1625, he publicly declared his Roman Catholic faith, resigned his political offices, and was elevated to the Irish peerage as Baron Baltimore.

Calvert’s interest in colonization began with the 1621 establishment of Ferryland in Newfoundland, which he later chartered as Avalon. He visited the settlement in 1627 and returned with his family in 1628. The venture was short-lived; the harsh climate caused significant illness and death, while religious friction over his Catholic practices created further instability. After his wife departed for Virginia, Calvert sought a more hospitable climate, requesting a land grant from King Charles I in the Chesapeake Bay region. Although he was barred from settling in Virginia due to his religion, his vision for a Catholic sanctuary persisted.

Calvert died on April 15, 1632, just before the formal charter for the Maryland colony was finalized. His son, Cecil, secured the grant and oversaw the realization of his father’s colonial ambitions. While George Calvert’s own efforts in the Americas were marked by hardship and political exclusion, his legacy endured through the establishment of the Province of Maryland, which provided the safe haven he had long envisioned for his coreligionists.
