In short: With its brilliant red and yellow blooms, Gloriosa superba is a striking sight. Yet, beneath its vibrant petals lies a deadly secret. Highly poisonous and containing lethal alkaloids, this plant is as dangerous as it is decorative, used in everything from traditional medicine to accidental fatal poisonings.

Gloriosa superba, a climbing perennial native to much of Africa and parts of Asia, is defined by its striking transformation. Its small, green buds eventually blossom into large, solitary flowers that can reach up to 12 cm in length. These flowers transition from green to a brilliant yellow or red, though variations in white, orange, or maroon have also been observed.

The plant's danger stems from high concentrations of colchicine, an alkaloid found in its seeds and tubers. While the seeds contain two to five times more colchicine than the tuber, most parts of the plant are toxic. This chemical is so potent that ingestion can be fatal to humans, cattle, and fish. In humans, a dose of 60 mg is considered lethal, though some have survived much higher doses of 350 mg. Because the tubers can be mistaken for sweet potatoes or yams, accidental poisoning is a significant risk.

Despite its toxicity, the plant is deeply integrated into human culture and medicine. It is the national flower of Zimbabwe and the state flower of Tamil Nadu, where its medicinal uses are highly valued. In traditional practices like Ayurveda, it is used to treat various ailments, including arthritis and ulcers. In Africa, its derivatives serve as arrow poisons, snake repellents, and even treatments for asthma or coughs. Even in modern medicine, colchicine is utilized to treat gout and inflammatory disorders, and it is studied in oncology for its ability to slow cell division.
