In short: While the world fixated on the public life of Diana, Princess of Wales, she found a private connection with Hasnat Khan, a British-Pakistani heart surgeon. Their two-year romance remains a subject of intense fascination, yet Khan has consistently maintained a reserved stance regarding their time together and his personal history.

Born in Jhelum, Pakistan, in 1958, Hasnat Khan followed a rigorous medical path long before his name entered the public consciousness. After graduating from King Edward Medical University in 1984, he trained in general medicine and surgery in Lahore. His career eventually took him across the globe, including a stint in Sydney starting in 1987, before he returned to London to work at institutions like the Royal Brompton Hospital and the London Chest Hospital. His professional life continued to evolve through the 2000s, with roles at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Harefield Hospital, followed by a period leading a cardiac facility in Malaysia and a consultant role at Basildon University Hospital by 2013.

The relationship between Khan and the Princess of Wales began in the late summer of 1995 and lasted until July 1997. During this period, the couple reportedly discussed the possibility of marriage, though Khan expressed significant concerns about the intense media scrutiny that would inevitably follow such a union, describing it as a potential hell. Despite reports from friends and staff suggesting they were soulmates, Khan remained notably private. He attended her funeral in September 1997 and later provided testimony during the 2008 inquest into her death, where he maintained that the fatal car crash was a tragic accident.

Following the end of his relationship with the Princess, Khan’s life continued away from the spotlight. He married Hadia Sher Ali in 2006, though they filed for divorce in 2008. He was later linked to fellow surgeon Alexandra Panagoulas and subsequently married Somi Sohail. His life has been dramatized in various media, including the 2013 film Diana, where he was portrayed by Naveen Andrews, and the fifth season of The Crown, featuring Humayun Saeed. Despite these portrayals, Khan has remained largely reticent, choosing to focus on his surgical career rather than the public narratives surrounding his past.
