In short: Henry Benedict Stuart was the final Jacobite heir to the British throne, yet he never fought for it. Instead, he spent his life as a powerful cardinal in the Papal States, amassing immense wealth and influence while maintaining his royal claim from the quiet surroundings of Frascati, Italy.

Born in 1725 at the Palazzo Muti in Rome, Henry was the younger grandson of the deposed King James VII and II. While his father and brother actively plotted to regain the British throne, Henry pursued a life within the Church. He was ordained a priest in 1748 and rose to become the Dean of the College of Cardinals, serving for 60 years. His ecclesiastical career was remarkably lucrative, with revenues from abbeys and benefices across Europe and Spanish America providing him with an income of 40,000 pounds.

Despite his religious life, Henry remained a central figure for Jacobites. Following his brother Charles's death in 1788, he was recognized by supporters as Henry IX and I. His royal identity was complex; he signed his will as 'Henry R' and bequeathed the British Crown Jewels to the Prince of Wales. Yet, he lived in a state of diplomatic limbo, as the Vatican refused to recognize his claim, eventually referring to the Hanoverian George III as the legitimate King of Great Britain and Ireland.

Henry's personal life has long been a subject of historical speculation. Contemporary observers, including Giuseppe Gorani, noted his close attachments to men like his majordomo Giovanni Lercari and the nobleman Angelo Cesarini. These relationships, which sometimes caused friction with his family, have led modern historians to debate whether Henry was homosexual. He died in 1807 at age 82, leaving behind a legacy as a wealthy, pious aesthete who was the last to perform the royal touch to cure the sick.
