Born to Hollywood royalty, Hopper Penn navigates his own path in the film industry.
In short: Born in 1993 to actors Sean Penn and Robin Wright, Hopper Jack Penn carries a name inspired by legends Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson. Despite his famous lineage and early struggles with addiction, he has carved out a career in independent cinema, often working alongside his own family members.
Hopper Jack Penn grew up in Ross, California, before relocating to Los Angeles in 2009 after his parents separated. His upbringing was marked by the public nature of his parents' relationship, which he has described as rocky. His path into acting has frequently intersected with his family connections; he appeared alongside his father and sister, Dylan Penn, in the 2021 film Flag Day. His professional portfolio also includes roles in the 2022 feature Signs of Love and the 2023 project Devil's Peak, where he starred alongside his mother.
Beyond his major film roles, Penn has taken on diverse projects, including a lead performance in a 2023 short film written by Owen King and Destry Spielberg. His preparation for roles can be immersive; for the 2020 movie Puppy Love, he lived with the real-life individual he was portraying to better understand the character. Despite the industry perception of his background, Penn stated in 2023 that he does not identify with the term nepo baby, suggesting a desire to be viewed independently of his parents' status.
Penn's personal history includes a significant struggle with crystal meth addiction, a challenge he has openly discussed. He credits his father with helping him navigate the recovery process, which included time in rehabilitation. In 2018, he faced legal trouble in Nebraska following a traffic stop that led to an arrest for drug possession. He ultimately pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge. Today, he continues to work in the industry, maintaining a presence in both professional film circles and the public eye.
