In short: Long before the House of Windsor became a global icon, a German dynasty known as the Wettins was quietly weaving itself into the fabric of European royalty. From the United Kingdom to Belgium, their bloodlines shaped the modern map, yet their true name was almost lost to history.

The House of Wettin is one of Europe's oldest dynasties, with roots tracing back to the town of Wettin in Saxony-Anhalt. The family's ascent through the Holy Roman Empire was a centuries-long process of territorial acquisition. By 1030, they held the Saxon Eastern March, and by 1423, they had secured the Duchy of Saxony and the prestigious status of prince-electors. In 1485, the Treaty of Leipzig formally split the dynasty into two competing branches: the senior Ernestine line and the junior Albertine line.

The two branches followed vastly different trajectories. The Ernestines were central figures in the Protestant Reformation, with Frederick III appointing Martin Luther to the University of Wittenberg. However, following the Schmalkaldic War in 1546/7, the Albertine branch seized the electoral dignity. While the Ernestines' territories eventually fragmented into a patchwork of small Thuringian duchies, the Albertines expanded their influence, even providing monarchs for the Polish–Lithronian Commonwealth between 1697 and 1763.

By the 19th century, the Ernestine cadet branch, Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, became known as the 'stud of Europe.' Through strategic marriages, they ascended the thrones of Belgium, Portugal, and Bulgaria, and provided Prince Albert to the British monarchy. Interestingly, the British Royal Family's true surname was determined to be Wettin by the College of Arms; however, during World War I, the name was abandoned for 'Windsor' because advisors feared 'Wettin' sounded 'unsuitably comic.' Today, the Belgian royal line remains the only branch still actively reigning.
