How a smaller nation survived the initial onslaught of the Great War

How Serbia Survived World War I · 11:13 · Video: Knowledgia · Watch at the source

In short: While history often focuses on the Western Front's trenches, the Balkans saw a desperate fight for survival. Facing massive multi-front invasions and near-total collapse, Serbia managed to repel empires and emerge on the winning side through a series of remarkable military reversals.

In 1914, Serbia found itself at the center of the crisis that ignited World War I. Despite being numerically inferior, the Serbian army, led by commander Radomir Putnik, achieved significant early victories. Between August 15 and August 20, 1914, Serbian forces successfully repelled Austro-Hungarian offensives on Cer Mountain, followed by a victory at Šabac from August 21 to August 24. These successes forced an initial Austrian retreat, even as the empire launched subsequent offensives along the Drina River.

The conflict was characterized by a cycle of occupation and reclamation. By late 1914, the Battle of the Kolubara saw Austrian progress force the evacuation of Belgrade on November 30. However, the Serbian momentum returned; by December 15, a counterattack retook the capital and pushed the Austrians back. While mud and exhaustion prevented a total rout of the enemy, the victory secured a period of freedom from further Austrian advances.

The strategic landscape was further complicated by the entry of the Ottoman Empire into the war as a German ally. Driven by the leadership of Enver Paşa and the influence of German military instructors, the Ottomans signed a secret treaty on August 2, 1914. This entry, bolstered by the arrival of German warships like the Goeben and Breslau in the Dardanelles on August 10, helped tie down Russian and British forces in the Caucasus and Sinai Desert. Despite the overwhelming pressure of a multi-front invasion in 1915 and the grueling Great Retreat through Albania, Serbia eventually returned via the Salonika Front to secure its place among the victors.
