Australia is building six advanced Hunter-class frigates to dominate the underwater domain
In short: Designed as a modified version of the Type 26 frigate, the Hunter-class is set to become one of the world's most capable anti-submarine warships. These six vessels will be constructed in South Australia, blending international combat systems with Australian-developed radar technology to ensure high levels of lethality and regional deterrence.
The Hunter-class frigate program, designated Project SEA 5000, represents a significant evolution in Australia's naval capabilities. The ships are specifically engineered for anti-submarine warfare, with a name chosen to personify the role of hunting and pursuing underwater prey. Beyond their primary combat function, these vessels are designed with the flexibility to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, providing the Australian Defence Force with endurance and range across the region.
The technical architecture of the Hunter-class integrates global and local expertise. The ships will feature the US Navy’s Aegis combat management system, augmented by a custom tactical interface developed by Saab Australia. A critical component of their sensor suite is the Australian-developed CEA Phased-Array Radar, which works alongside advanced hull-mounted and towed-array sonars. The frigates are powered by a Combined Diesel Electric or Gas (CODLOG) propulsion system and are equipped to operate the MH-60R Seahawk Romeo helicopter, further extending their surveillance and strike capabilities.
Construction is centered at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia, managed by BAE Systems Maritime Australia. The project has moved through several phases since the initial competitive evaluation process began in 2016, which included contenders Navantia and Fincantieri. Following the selection of the BAE Systems design in 2018, the program reached a major milestone in June 2024 when the head contract was amended to include the construction of the first three ships, coinciding with the cutting of steel for the first vessel. The Royal Australian Navy expects to accept the first delivery in 2032, with subsequent ships following in 2034 and 2036.
