How a Japanese rock vocalist conquered Madison Square Garden and beyond
In short: From selling out Tokyo's massive Dome in just four minutes to headlining international stages, Hyde has redefined the global reach of Japanese rock. Discover the career of the L'Arc-en-Ciel frontman, whose musical influence spans from anime soundtracks to historic performances on the U.S.S. Missouri.
Born Hideto Takarai in 1969, the artist known as Hyde rose to international prominence as the lead vocalist and lyricist for L'Arc-en-Ciel. Since joining the band in 1991, he has been a central figure in one of Japan's most successful musical acts, contributing to a legacy that includes over 40 million records sold. A mere four minutes was all it took to fill the 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome during their December 1997 run, proving their local supremacy.
Hyde's influence extends far beyond the Japanese domestic market. L'Arc-en-Ciel made history in 2012 as the initial Japanese group to hold a solo concert at New York's Madison Square Garden. His reach into the West was further cemented through his work with the hard rock duo Vamps, formed in 2008 with guitarist K.A.Z. Vamps achieved notable milestones, such as being the only Japanese act in the lineup of the 2009 Vans Warped Tour and performing on the battleship U.S.S. Missouri in Hawaii.
Parallel to his band work, Hyde has maintained a prolific solo career since his 2001 debut with 'evergreen.' His solo discography includes albums like Roentgen and the English-language project Anti, which reached number 3 on the Billboard charts in Japan. His versatility is highlighted by his collaborations with diverse artists, ranging from the symphonic metal of Apocalyptica to the production of tracks for Mika Nakashima, and his work on iconic anime themes like 'Ready Steady Go' for Fullmetal Alchemist.
