How Ian Hecox turned a viral Pokémon lip sync into a digital comedy empire
In short: Long before the creator economy was a formal industry, Ian Hecox and his childhood friend Anthony Padilla were already defining it. From a viral Pokémon video that once dominated YouTube to navigating corporate acquisitions and eventual independence, Hecox has remained the constant force behind the enduring sketch comedy brand Smosh.
Born in 1987 in Sacramento, California, Ian Hecox began his creative journey in 2002 when he joined smosh.com, a site established by his friend Anthony Padilla. The duo transitioned to YouTube in 2005, finding early, massive success with lip-sync videos. Their rendition of the Pokémon Theme famously became the most-viewed video on the platform, accumulating over 24 million views before being removed due to copyright issues. This early viral momentum set the stage for their pivot toward scripted sketch comedy, including popular series like Food Battle and If It Were Real.
The trajectory of Smosh was marked by significant corporate shifts. In 2011, the company was acquired by Defy Media, a period during which the channel reached the milestone of being the most-subscribed on YouTube on three separate occasions. When Defy Media collapsed in 2018, Hecox took on the responsibility of securing new ownership to ensure the brand's survival. Rhett & Link purchased Smosh in 2019, holding the company until June 20, 2023, when Hecox and a returning Padilla announced they had reacquired the brand to operate independently once again.
Beyond the core Smosh channel, Hecox has maintained a diverse career in film and television. He has acted in projects such as The Angry Birds Movie and Ghostmates, and served as an executive producer for Oishi High School Battle. Despite the professional strain that followed Padilla’s 2017 departure, the two reconnected in 2022. Hecox, noted for his ability to balance exaggerated and muted humor, remains the sole original member of the production company, steering it through nearly two decades of digital evolution.
