Mark Grayson is the Viltrumite heir who protects Earth from his own imperial legacy
In short: Created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, Invincible is more than a standard superhero. Born to a human mother and an extraterrestrial father, Mark Grayson discovers his heritage is not one of protection, but of conquest. His journey from a struggling teenager to the ruler of the Viltrum Empire is complex.
Mark Grayson, known as Invincible, first appeared in a 2002 preview before launching his own series in 2003. As the son of the powerful Viltrumite Omni-Man and a human mother, Mark inherits immense physical capabilities, including strength and durability that allow him to survive nuclear explosions. His physiology also grants him a lifespan potentially exceeding a thousand years, though he is far from indestructible. If his vital organs, particularly his heart or brain, suffer sufficient damage from a powerful enough opponent, he can be killed.
The narrative arc of Invincible is defined by his rejection of his father's true mission: to conquer Earth for the Viltrum Empire. After learning the truth about his father's origins, Mark dedicates himself to defending his home planet against threats like Grand Regent Thragg. His path eventually leads him to discover his own status as the rightful heir to the Viltrum throne, following the assassination of his grandfather, Emperor Argall. Ultimately, Mark assumes leadership of the empire, steering his people toward a new era of universal peace.
Beyond his core series, the character has become a fixture of the Image Universe, appearing in titles ranging from Savage Dragon to Bomb Queen. His reach extends into various media, including a 2021 television series where he is voiced by Steven Yeun, and a 2026 video game, Invincible VS, featuring Aleks Le. Whether navigating multiversal crossovers with Spider-Man or dealing with the personal fallout of his heritage, Mark Grayson remains a central figure in modern superhero fiction, constantly balancing his immense power against the vulnerabilities of his human side.
