In short: For years, the iPad ran the same software as the iPhone. But in 2019, Apple broke the mold, rebranding its mobile operating system to reflect a device that was becoming something much more powerful than a large-screen phone.

When the first iPad launched on April 3, 2010, it actually ran iPhone OS 3.2, a version of the software used for the iPhone and iPod touch. At that time, the iPad and iPhone shared nearly identical software, with only minor differences in app selection and user interface based on screen size. Over the following years, the iPad's software began to diverge through the addition of desktop-like features like multitasking, drag and drop, and a dock reminiscent of macOS.

The true separation became official at the 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference, where Apple announced the rebranding of the iPad's software to iPadOS. Starting with iPadOS 13, this new identity emphasized that the tablet was no longer just a large iPhone, but a distinct platform with its own trajectory. Since then, the software has moved further away from its mobile roots, introducing complex windowing systems and advanced intelligence.

The evolution has been marked by significant functional leaps. While early updates focused on basic utility, later versions introduced Stage Manager for window organization, Scribble for handwriting conversion, and even the integration of the Health app. Most recently, the platform has embraced artificial intelligence, with iPadOS 18 introducing Apple Intelligence and iPadOS 27 introducing Siri AI. This progression highlights a shift from a shared mobile experience to a specialized, powerful computing environment.
