In short: First played in 1927, the Irish Open has evolved from a local challenge into a cornerstone of the European Tour. Despite gaps during wartime and financial turbulence, it remains a premier event, drawing massive galleries and hosting world-class talent across Ireland's most iconic links courses for nearly a century.

The inaugural Irish Open took place in 1927 at Portmarnock Golf Club, where George Duncan secured the first title and a £150 prize. Early years were dominated by English professionals, including the Whitcombe brothers, who claimed four victories between 1928 and 1936. The tournament faced significant interruptions, notably during the war years, and a long hiatus between 1953 and 1975, when it was revived under the sponsorship of Carroll's. Plans to restart the event in 1970 had previously collapsed after backers withdrew.

The tournament's history is marked by shifting financial landscapes and diverse sponsorship. From the departure of Nissan in 2006 to the recent transition from Horizon Therapeutics to Amgen following a 2023 corporate takeover, the event has navigated complex economic realities. In 2009, Adare Golf Club famously withdrew after two years, citing unsustainable losses. Conversely, the event has seen periods of prestige, such as its inclusion in the European Tour's Rolex Series from 2017 to 2020, which guaranteed a minimum prize fund of $7 million.

Beyond the professional competition, the Irish Open is celebrated for its immense public appeal. In 2012, Royal Portrush Golf Club set a European Tour attendance record with 131,000 spectators over six days, marking the first time a tournament sold out before play began. While the event has visited various venues across the country, it has never been hosted in the province of Connacht. Today, it serves as a vital fixture, often acting as a qualifying gateway for The Open Championship.
