From finance graduate to heavyweight champion: the versatile career of Jake Hager
In short: He was set to start a career in finance in Dallas, but a last-minute contract changed everything. Trace the journey of an elite athlete who transitioned from record-breaking collegiate wrestling to becoming a multi-time world champion in professional wrestling and an undefeated mixed martial artist.
Born in 1982, Donald Jacob Hager Jr. followed a path of high-level athletic achievement long before entering the ring. A standout at the University of Oklahoma, he was a two-sprint athlete in both football and wrestling. In 2006, he set a significant collegiate record by achieving 30 pins in a single season as an All-American. Before focusing solely on wrestling during his sophomore year, he served as a second-string defensive tackle for the Oklahoma football team. His high school years also saw him secure an OSSAA 2A state championship in the 215 pound division in 2000.
His professional trajectory shifted abruptly in mid-2006. On the very day he was scheduled to begin a job at a Dallas, Texas, finance firm, WWE offered him a contract. This led to his tenure as Jack Swagger, where he achieved significant success, including winning the ECW Championship, the United States Championship, and the World Heavyweight Championship. His rise through the ranks included dominating developmental territories like Florida Championship Wrestling, where he became the undisputed heavyweight champion. He also famously utilized a Money in the Bank contract to capture the World Heavyramph Championship from Chris Jericho.
Hager's career is marked by a notable ability to pivot between disciplines. After leaving WWE in 2017, he pursued mixed martial arts with Bellator MMA. Competing in the heavyweight division, he maintained an undefeated professional record of 3–0 (1), securing victories via arm-triangle choke in both of his wins. He eventually announced his retirement from MMA in September 2023. His Bellator debut took place on January 26, 2019, against J.W. Kiser. He followed this with a second victory against T.J. Jones in May 2019.
Beyond the ring, his early life in Perry, Oklahoma, was shaped by connections to wrestling legends, including living near the grandson of Danny Hodge. His career has spanned various personas, from the 'great American hero' in WWE to his current work in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as Jake Hager. During his time in Lucha Underground, he competed under the name Jake Strong and ended the era as the promotion's final champion.
