The Brooklyn rapper who mentored Jay-Z and pioneered the influential triplet flow technique
In short: Before he was a footnote in a high-profile feud, Jaz-O was the Brooklyn prodigy who signed the first major label deal for a rap artist. Beyond his business history, he fundamentally altered hip-hop rhythm by inventing the triplet flow, a complex delivery style now standard among the genre's elite lyricists.
Born Jonathan Allen Burks in Brooklyn, Jaz-O emerged from the same Marcy Houses projects as Jay-Z, eventually becoming his mentor. By 1986, he had already debuted his protégé on the single 'H. P. Gets Busy'. His early career was marked by significant industry milestones; he became the first rap artist to sign with EMI Records, securing what was then the largest advance and recording budget in the genre. His debut album, 'Word to the Jaz', arrived in 1989, followed by 'To Your Soul' in 1990.
Jaz-O’s most enduring contribution to music is the 'triplet flow'. This rhythmic innovation allows a rapper to extend their delivery beyond the standard sixteen syllables within a 4/4 time signature. By multiplying syllables into twenty-fourths, he created a triplet of an eighth, a technique that has since been adopted by artists such as Twista, Tech N9ne, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. This technical shift fundamentally changed how rappers approach phrasing and complexity in their verses.
The relationship between Jaz-O and Jay-Z was defined by a long-standing, public feud that began when Jaz-O refused to sign with Roc-A-Fella Records. The disagreement, which involved a $300,000 contract offer, led to years of diss tracks and public barbs. However, the two eventually reconciled in December 2017 at a concert. By 2019, they had established a professional connection again, with Jaz-O’s Kingz Kounty Media Group utilizing Roc Nation’s Equity Distribution for his 2020 EP, 'The Warmup'.
Beyond his own releases, Jaz-O maintained a prolific career as a producer, working with artists like Rakim, M.O.P., and Queen Latifah. He also played a pivotal role in the success of The Lox, producing their demo track 'I Got The Power', which eventually reached Sean 'Puffy' Combs. His career remains a complex intersection of industry pioneering, technical rhythmic innovation, and the volatile dynamics of hip-hop mentorship.
