Before it was a new religion, Christianity was a Jewish sect called The Way
In short: We often imagine Christianity as a sudden break from Judaism. In reality, the movement began as a group of Jewish followers in 1st-century Judea, deeply embedded in Jewish law, awaiting a messianic renewal through the very traditions they refused to abandon.
In the 1st century AD, under the Herodian tetrarchy, a community emerged in Roman Judea that did not view itself as founding a new faith. Known to some as followers of "The Way," these early Jewish Christians operated within the framework of Second Temple Judaism. They maintained strict adherence to the Torah, including circumcision, the Sabbath, and kosher dietary laws, while adding a single, transformative conviction: that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah (S1:p1, p4, p7, p20).
The separation of Christianity from Judaism was not a sudden event but a long-term, non-linear process. While the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD is often cited as a turning point, more recent scholarship suggests the Bar Kochba revolt (132–136 AD) was the primary driver of the split. This period saw the movement expand into the Greco-Roman world, attracting "God-fearers"—non-Jews attracted to Jewish worship. This expansion created a theological tension: how to integrate Gentiles without requiring full Torah observance.
The Apostle Paul became a pivotal figure in this transition, arguing that Gentiles could participate in Israel's promises through faith in Christ and baptism without full adherence to the Law. Meanwhile, the leadership of the Jerusalem church shifted from Peter to the more conservative James the Just, whose stricter views on Jewish Law gained wider acceptance. By the 5th century AD, this original Jewish strand had almost entirely disappeared, leaving behind the distinct denominations of Nicene Christianity we recognize today (S1:p1, p2).
