Why the global Jewish population is concentrated in a handful of urban hubs
In short: The world's Jewish population is not spread evenly across the globe. Instead, it is heavily clustered within a few major metropolitan centers, often characterized by high standards of living, advanced technological sectors, and deep international connections. Understanding this urban concentration reveals much about modern Jewish settlement patterns.
Global Jewish demographics are defined by a striking level of concentration. As of 202im, more than half of the world's Jewish population—specifically 51.2%—resided in just ten metropolitan areas. These key centers of settlement are rarely isolated; they typically function as national or regional capitals. These cities often possess the advanced infrastructure, higher education institutions, and robust technology sectors necessary to support large, interconnected communities.
New York City serves as a primary example of this urban density. It holds the distinction of being home to the largest Jewish community within any single city proper globally. The numbers have shifted over the last decade; in 2011, the UJA-Federation of New York reported that the five boroughs were home to 1,086,000 Jews, making up 13% of the city's total population. By 2023, that figure was estimated at 960,000, with nearly half of those residents living in Brooklyn.
However, determining exact global figures remains a significant challenge for researchers. Because census enumerations in many nations do not officially record religious or ethnic backgrounds, there is an inherent lack of certainty regarding precise numbers of adherents. This means that many lists of Jewish populations are necessarily incomplete. For instance, many Jewish-majority cities in Israel are often excluded from such rankings. In the United States, much of the available data is sourced from the Jewish Data Bank, which tracks statistics for service areas that span multiple counties within a metropolitan area, rather than just city limits.
