In short: Before he was an Academy Award nominee, John Powell was playing in an amateur rock and roll band. Today, his melodies define entire cinematic universes, from the high-stakes Bourne franchise to the whimsical worlds of DreamWorks Animation.

Born in London on September 18, 1963, John Powell’s musical foundation was built on the violin and viola. After studying at Trinity College of Music, his early career was far removed from the grandeur of Hollywood. He spent time playing for Faboulistics, an amateur rock and roll band, and later worked in the commercial sector, co-founding the independent music house Thinking Music in 1995.

Powell’s ascent in the film industry is deeply intertwined with the legendary Hans Zimmer and his Remote Control Productions studio. This period saw him collaborating with frequent partners like Harry Gregson-Williams on landmark animated films such as Antz, Chicken Run, and Shrek. His move to Los Angeles in 1997 marked a turning point, beginning with his first major film score, Face/Off.

His versatility is perhaps his greatest strength. He has navigated the intense action of the Bourne franchise, the epic fantasy of How to Train Your Dragon—which earned him an Academy Award nomination—and the expansive Star Wars universe in Solo: A Star Wars Story. His work spans over 70 feature films, including significant contributions to Blue Sky Studios and DreamWorks Animation.

Beyond the screen, Powell has demonstrated a profound commitment to large-scale concert music. After a sabbatical in 2013, he composed 'A Prussian Requiem,' a 45-minute oratorio commemorating the centenary of World War I, which premiered at London's Royal Festival Hall in 2016. As he looks toward the future, his upcoming projects include the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake and the film adaptation of Wicked.
