From country music stardom to a high-level presidential appointment
In short: John Rich has navigated a diverse career path, moving from bass guitar in the band Lonestar to winning The Celebrity Apprentice. Beyond the stage, he has become a prominent political voice and, by 2026, transitioned into a specialized role within the United States government.
Born in 1974, John Rich's musical journey began in Nashville after graduating from Dickson County Senior High. He first gained recognition as a member of the country band Lonestar from 1992 to 1998, where he served as the bass guitarist and alternated as lead vocalist with Richie McDonald. While in the group, he co-wrote the number-one single "Come Cryin' to Me". After leaving Lonestar in 1998, he pursued a solo career and eventually formed the successful duo Big & Rich with Big Kenny in 2002. His early musical ambitions included becoming a professional team roper. Before his success with Lonestar, he worked as a singer at Opryland USA. He also released a solo album titled Underneath the Same Moon.
Rich's influence extends into songwriting and production for major artists, including Taylor Swift, Faith Hill, and Jason Aldean. His versatility is evidenced by his diverse musical collaborations, ranging from a duet with Marie Osmord in 2016 to a track with the heavy metal band Black Label Society in 2011. He also demonstrated his philanthropic side on the 2011 season of The Celebrity Apprentice, where he was declared the winner and raised over $1.5 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He previously hosted the reality television series Gone Country on CMT. Additionally, he served as a judge for the NBC programme Nashville Star.
In recent years, Rich has become an outspoken figure in American politics. A supporter of the Republican Party, he endorsed Donald Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024. Such political involvement led to a major professional transition; on 10 July 2026, Rich took his oath as the United States Special Envoy for American Landowners during Donald Trump's presidency. His musical output includes the politically charged track titled Progress. He also released a song called I'm Offended in 2023.
