How a wrestler became the first Triple Crown champion in NXT history
In short: Johnny Gargano is a defining figure in modern professional wrestling, celebrated as the heart and soul of NXT. His journey from independent circuits to becoming the first-ever NXT Triple Crown winner reveals a career built on technical versatility, long-standing rivalries, and an unwavering commitment to the craft of wrestling.
Born in 1987 in Lakewood, Ohio, John Anthony Nicholas Gargano entered the wrestling world early, training at the Cleveland All Pro Training Center by age 16. His style, which he calls Lucharesu, blends British chain wrestling, lucha libre, and Japanese puroresu. This eclectic foundation allowed him to thrive across the American independent circuit, including notable stints in Dragon Gate USA, Evolve, and Chikara, where he held the Open the Freedom Gate Championship for a record-setting 873 days during his first reign.
Gargano’s transition to WWE was marked by persistence. After sporadic early appearances, he signed a contract in 2016 following a 2015 tryout. His tenure in NXT became legendary through his partnership and subsequent heated rivalry with Tommaso Ciampa. By winning the NXT Championship, the NXT North American Championship, and the NXT Tag Team Championship, he secured his place as the brand's first Triple Crown winner. His success was so profound that he earned the moniker The Heart and Soul of NXT.
Beyond the accolades, Gargano’s career has been defined by physical resilience. In 2008, he was advised to reconsider his career after a hairline fracture in his back was linked to a leg length discrepancy, yet he returned to the ring within six months. Even after departing WWE in 2021, he returned in 2022 to the main roster, continuing his professional evolution. His story illustrates the grind of the independent scene and the strategic maneuvering required to reach the pinnacle of global sports entertainment.
