The horror icon who literally burned his way into stardom
In short: Before he became the face of cinematic slashers, Kane Hodder survived a stunt gone wrong that left him with severe burns. This physical trauma actually led to his first major role—a part that eventually went to another actor, sparking a lifelong friendship and a career defined by transformation.
Kane Hodder's path to becoming the definitive Jason Voorhees was paved by a literal trial by fire. Early in his career, an attempted fire stunt resulted in second and third-degree burns across much of his upper body. This injury initially made him the first choice for Freddy Krueger in 'A Nightmare on Elm Street,' but the role ultimately went to Robert Englund. Despite this setback, Hodder formed a lasting bond with Englund, who remains a close friend today.
Hodder eventually became the most prolific cinematic killer of his era, notably being the first actor to portray Jason Voorhees in four consecutive films, beginning with 'The New Blood' and concluding with 'Jason X.' His career is marked by physical versatility; he performed stunts for Leatherface in 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III' and even portrayed Freddy Krueger’s clawed glove hand. He later gained critical acclaim as Victor Crowley in the 'Hatchet' series, winning a Horror Jury Award for his performance.
Beyond the screen, Hodder's life is defined by a contrast between his violent roles and personal advocacy. His autobiography, 'Unmasked,' reveals a childhood of relentless bullying that he escaped by moving to a remote South Pacific island during his teens. Today, despite his reputation as a slasher icon, he spends time volunteering with children in burn centers—a poignant connection to the injury that nearly ended his career before it began.
The industry has occasionally been fickle; for example, Hodder was replaced by stuntman Ken Kirzinger in 'Freddy vs. Jason' (2003), a move cited as being driven by studio decisions regarding height and location. Nevertheless, Hodder remains a staple of the genre, transitioning from live-action to video games and founding ghost hunting groups, maintaining a reputation for being a friendly fan favorite.
