In short: Karl Hanke began his career as a low-level party organizer and milling instructor before rising through the ranks of the Third Reich. By the war's end, he was appointed the final Reichsführer-SS by Hitler, only to die in obscurity while attempting to escape capture by Czech guards.

Born in 1903, Karl Hanke initially pursued a career as a milling engineer, working in various mills across Silesia, Bavaria, and Tyrol. His trajectory shifted dramatically after joining the Nazi Party in 1928. Rising through the party hierarchy in Berlin, he became a close associate of Joseph Goebbels and an early patron of architect Albert Speer. His political ascent was briefly interrupted in 1939 following an affair with Magda Goebbels, which led to his removal from the Propaganda Ministry.

Hanke’s military and administrative career saw him serve under Erwin Rommel in France before he was appointed Gauleiter of Lower Silesia in 1941. Known as the 'Hangman of Breslau' for his fanatical enforcement of Nazi policy, he oversaw the execution of over 1,000 people in his jurisdiction. During the 82-day Siege of Breslau in 1945, he commanded the city's defense with extreme zeal, even as 80 to 90 percent of the urban landscape was reduced to ruins by bombardment.

In his final days, Hanke’s unwavering obedience earned him the German Order and, on 29 April 1945, the title of Reichsführer-SS, replacing the disgraced Heinrich Himmler. He fled the besieged city in a small plane on 5 May. Disguised as an SS private to avoid detection, he was captured by Czech partisans. On 8 June 1945, while attempting to escape from a prisoner of war march, Hanke was shot and subsequently beaten to death by his captors, ending his life just weeks after his final promotion.
