In short: Imagine a world where CEOs settle massive corporate disputes not in boardrooms, but in gladiatorial pits. In the manga Kengan Ashura, wealthy merchants hire elite fighters to compete in high-stakes matches where the winner takes all, and the stakes include the very existence of their companies.

The premise of Kengan Ashura, written by Yabako Sandrovical and illustrated by Daromeon, centers on the Kengan matches. These are unarmed combat bouts held in arenas where powerful business owners and merchants compete for dominance. The tension reaches its peak during the Kengan Annihilation Tournament, a competition organized by the industry's most powerful CEOs. The stakes are absolute: the winner claims the prestigious position of Kengan Association chairman, while losers face devastating consequences. For example, Hideki Nogi, CEO of the Nogi Group, established the tournament with a high-risk stipulation: if his group fails to win, the company will be dissolved and absorbed by the Kengan Association.

The narrative follows the unlikely partnership between Kazuo Yamashita, a 56-year-old, meek salaryman for the Nogi Group, and the formidable fighter Tokita "Ashura" Ohma. After witnessing a street fight, Yamashita is tasked by Nogi with managing Ohma, a fighter who utilizes the complex Niko Style martial art. This style, taught by Ohma's late master Tokita Niko, consists of four distinct katas: Adamantine, Flame, Redirection, and Water.

The series' popularity was driven by fan engagement; in 2015, a poll on the Ura Sunday platform saw Kengan Ashura win an anime adaptation with 2.3 million votes out of 9 million cast. Since its serialization from April 2012 to August 2018, the franchise has expanded into a sequel, Kengan Omega, and a Netflix animated series. The world of Kengan is also interconnected with other works by Sandrovich, such as How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? and Star: Strike It Rich, creating a shared universe of intense physical and corporate struggle.
